Say hello to our lead massage therapist, Brenda!
If you’ve been to Michigan Massage and Wellness in the last year and a half chances are you’ve met Brenda, our resident goddess of all things relaxation, therapeutic massage and Ashiatsu massage. If you haven’t met her yet, here is your chance to learn a little more about her!
What made you decide to pursue a career in massage therapy?
When we moved to Michigan I felt like it was the perfect time to reinvent myself. After some soul-searching I came back to a long forgotten passion for massage I had when I was younger. Having had regular massage and chiropractic care since a young age (chronic headaches and a jacked up spine), I have always valued the aspect of making someone feel better in a more holistic, hands-on approach. I enrolled in massage therapy school when I was 18 but life happened and I never completed the program. Fast forward many years and a couple jobs later, I came across Irene’s Myomassology Institute and enrolled in the massage program the same day I toured the school. It’s pretty awesome being able to help someone reduce their tension, pain and just escape from their hectic, busy life for a short while.
Tell us about your family, where you grew up, what brought you to Michigan?
My husband and I both grew up on a small mountain town in Arizona where Pluto was discovered. After we got married, we had an opportunity to move to Colorado – we really had a chance to soak up nature there. We moved to Michigan, sight unseen, about three years ago for my husband’s work. We are still adjusting to the concrete jungle but are really enjoying the community we have surrounded ourselves with.
Most importantly, we have two pint-sized pups – a Chorkie (chihuahua-yorkie mix), named Winston and a terrier mix, Kilani, who occasionally makes an appearance at Michigan Massage and Wellness.
Where are some of your favorite places in the US or world to visit?
I have been to so many wonderful places but so far on top my US list is – Moab, Kauai, Rocky Mountain National Park/Estes Park, and the Upper Peninsula (the beauty up there in unreal!). Vientienne, Laos is my mom’s old stomping ground – I was fortunate enough to experience it with her, my siblings and our significant others a couple of years ago. It’ll always have a special place in my heart.
What kind of music do you like to listen to while you’re working?
Anything calm and chill but happy for requests – always a nice change up to a massage hour listening to Bad Company, Huey Lewis and the News, Fleetwood Mac and good ‘ol hair bands.
Who would you like to be on a deserted island with?
My husband. I know, I know but hear me out. He can MacGyver the begeezus out of anything and everything, he can hunt, fish and he’s easy on the eyes 😉
What do you love about working at Michigan Massage and Wellness?
- The clients here are awesome.
- It’s kismet how Rebecca and I crossed paths (feel free to ask us if you don’t know the story). I am grateful to have a boss/mentor that is always encouraging me to learn and spends countless hours on the business so I can thrive.
- Have you seen my therapy room??
What are your favorite modalities to do?
Ashiatsu is one of my favorites to do on larger framed clients. The broad, slow strokes lets me get into the tissues deeper without the discomfort that elbows can sometimes cause. Also, like one of my fellow therapist friend has said, it’s like surfing on bodies. I hadn’t really considered it until Rebecca said “I’ve been wanting to take Ashiatsu for years and I don’t have time, do you want to learn it?”. I booked myself a massage so I could see how it felt and fell in love with it!
I’ve been really geeking out on Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) lately and having recently completed Medical Massage training I am really excited about diving deeper into the world of corrective bodywork alongside Rebecca.
Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
Eeeeek. This question gives me anxiety.
What do you do when you’re not fixing bodies?
Cuddle with my dogs, husband and binge watch movies.
I love to go camping, hiking and 4x4ing (what am I doing in metro Detroit?!). I’m not particularly good at it but I love to snowboard. I enjoy whipping up new creations in the kitchen as well as savoring dishes at new restaurants. When time and the pocketbook allows for it, we go explore as much as we can.
